Our Philosophy and Mission
The role of oak is as fundamental to the cooper as that of grape to the winemaker—both are the most important raw materials in their respective crafts, without which a masterpiece cannot be created.
The Barrel as a Precision Tool
For us, the barrel is an indispensable tool for quality winemaking. While it never becomes the dominant element, its essential role lies in unveiling the unique characteristics of wine, subtly and tactfully contributing to shaping its character. We believe that the barrel embodies the closest trusting relationship between the winemaker and the cooper, where the barrel is just as important to the winemaker as the vineyard itself.
Trust and Quality – The Essence of the Barrel
To us, the barrel symbolizes trust and quality. The winemaker places a year’s worth of work and investment into a barrel, trusting that the flavor profile they envisioned will come to fruition. This is why we are committed to providing the finest materials and the highest standards of craftsmanship. Every piece of our barrels is crafted from the finest Zemplén oak, characterized by sustainable forestry practices and expert care.
Heritage of Traditions and Mastery
The multigenerational heritage of barrel-making defines our work. Our father, László Kalina, began his career as a cooper in 1959, passing down the knowledge he accumulated over the decades. From a young age, we were imbued with a dedication to the cooperage craft, acquiring expertise that has become rare in the industry. Our commitment to artisanal techniques, deep knowledge of wood, and dedication to tradition ensure the unique quality of our barrels.
Our Family and Name as a Guarantee
While many barrel manufacturers market their products under a brand name, we attach our name to every barrel. Our logo reflects our family, its tradition, and our authenticity. Our barrels are not merely products—each piece reflects who we are and what we stand for.
Respect for the Environment
In our operations, we pay special attention to protecting our environment. We carefully select trees from the Zemplén forests, ensuring that forestry practices preserve the balance of nature. We are committed to sustainability and continually improve our technology to meet modern environmental standards in all our processes.
Our Oak – The Treasure of the Zemplén Landscape
The raw material for our barrels is sourced from the steep and rocky areas of the Zemplén forests surrounding Tokaj. These forests boast exceptional 100-120-year-old sessile oaks, unique in the world. The Zemplén oak, Quercus Petraea, with its dense structure, exceptional aromas, and low tannin content, particularly favors wine aging, creating a fine and complex flavor profile. Since Maria Theresa's decree in 1769, these forests have been managed sustainably according to strict environmental regulations. Selective logging and replanting ensure that the Zemplén forests will remain viable for generations.
Our Company and Traditions
The foundations of Kalina Barrel Manufactory were laid by our father, László Kalina, who began working as a small-scale cooper in 1959. Since then, our family has passed down this craft through multiple generations. Today, I lead the business in Mád, Tokaj-Hegyalja, employing the most modern technologies while remaining true to artisanal traditions. With each barrel we create, our goal is to achieve perfect harmony among wood, fire, and wine.
The Cooper’s Creed
In barrel-making, we strive to collaborate with our partners to find the unique toasting level that best suits their wines' character. Our goal is to enhance every aroma and note from the oak that enriches the flavor profile of the wines and elevates the winemaking experience. We believe that the best advertisement is a satisfied customer, and with every barrel, we aim to uphold this standard.
Cooperage as Innovation
We continuously research how oak influences the aging of wine and other beverages, collaborating with winemakers who share our commitment to innovation and professional development. For Kalina Barrel Manufactory, every barrel presents a new opportunity to create perfect harmony between nature and the art of winemaking.
